The Rock Hill Board of Historic Review hears appeals to the City Building Code as related to identified historic structures, and preserves the character of architecturally and historically significant structures. This Board was created January 9, 1989.

Seven members appointed by City Council. Prefer members to have an interesting competence in or knowledge of historic preservation, and, where possible, shall be appointed from among professionals in the disciplines of architecture, history, architectural history, archaeology or related disciplines such as urban planning, American studies, American civilization, cultural anthropology, engineering or real estate. Members must reside within the Rock Hill City limits.

  • Adopt the standards or guidelines for the identification and designation of historic properties and historic districts.
  • Review plans for renovation, alteration, removal or demolition of historic structures and the construction of new structures within historic areas.
  • Survey and identify historic properties.
  • Submit recommendations to Planning Commission and City Council as to the designation of historic properties or districts.
  • Hold public meetings to review plans for renovation, alteration, removal or demolition of historic structures and new construction within historic districts.
  • Review and recommend properties or sites to the South Carolina Department of Archives and History for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Advise and assist property owners on the physical and financial aspects of preservation, renovation, rehabilitation, and reuse of historic properties.
  • Must attend state-mandated six-hour orientation training within one year of appointment and attend at least three hours of continuing education each year.
Meeting Schedule:
The Board meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall. Special meetings or on-site meetings may be called, as necessary. Meetings generally last 1-1 ½ hours, with additional preparation time needed. It is recommended that Board members visit the site of each agenda item prior to the meeting.
