Ben Grant Named Rock Hill Fire Chief

Post Date:11/03/2025 9:34 AM

Today, Rock Hill City Manager David Vehaun announced the promotion of Michael (Ben) Grant to Fire Chief of the Rock Hill Fire Department (RHFD).  Grant succeeds former Chief Mike Blackmon, who retired from the City in July.

As Fire Chief, Grant will oversee the Rock Hill Fire Department’s 142 employees across three divisions: Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention/Inspections, and Administration.  The department operates six fire stations in addition to Headquarters/Rock Hill Fire Museum and the Rock Hill Fire Training Center.  The RHFD proudly maintains an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 1 rating, the highest rating given to departments, indicating superior property fire protection and emergency response services.

In his previous role as Deputy Chief of Operations, Grant supervised the Suppression Division Battalion Chiefs and responded to all major emergencies, serving as Incident Commander or Public Information Officer as needed. He has played a key role in departmental planning, implementation, and evaluation of operations. Grant brings extensive experience in operational leadership, emergency response management, resource deployment, and effective communication during critical incidents.

Grant is a third-generation firefighter with over 22 years of professional experience, including 17 years with the RHFD.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration from Columbia Southern University and an Associate of Science Degree from the University of South Carolina–Union.  Grant holds the South Carolina Chief Fire Officer certification, is a South Carolina Certified Emergency Manager, and a National Registered Advanced EMT.  In addition to his operational experience, Grant has contributed significantly to firefighter education and training. He has served as an Adjunct Instructor for the South Carolina Fire Academy and is a lead instructor in multiple disciplines within the department.

Grant is married to Brittany Clark Grant and together they have three children: Katelyn, Henry, and Hunter.
