Trip Leading

Every trip leader starts somewhere. You should start here!

"Everyone of use can develop the leadership skills we need to meet the leadership challenges we deal with, right down to [leading an afternoon kayak trip on the lake]." (John Graham, Outdoor Leadership)

The first step towards providing  a great kayaking trip for others is being able to take care of yourself! This two-day clinic begins with development and assessment of your personal paddling and rescue techniques. Your focus on day two will be developing the skills, habits and perspective needed to plan and execute a safe and fun experience for your kayaking group. During this experience you'll have the opportunity to obtain an official America Canoe Association (ACA) card stating that  you passed a Level 1: Introduction to Kayaking Skill Assessment! For more information about ACA Essential Eligibility Criteria and Assessment Criteria please visit ACA Kayaking Courses page.

At the end of Beginning Trip Leading for Kayakers, you will be able to:

  •  Better manage your own personal safety on the water
  •  Get where you want to go on the water more easily and efficiently by using proper paddling technique
  •  Execute basic self and assisted rescues after a capsize
  •  Increase your group's chances of success through good trip planning, group management and communication on the water, hazard identification and avoidance
