Antenna and/or Co-location on Existing Tower

An antenna is a device used to transmit and/or receive radio or electromagnetic waves between land based or orbiting uses. The City strongly encourages that new antennas be placed on existing towers or structures whenever possible. A co-location is a situation in which two (2) or more different wireless communication service providers place antenna(s) or other equipment on a common antenna-supporting structure or tower. The allowable height of an antenna varies based on the zoning district it is placed in.  A variance would be required by the Zoning Board of Appeals to exceed any allowable height.

To apply for an antenna or co-location approval, complete the Antenna and/or Co-location on Existing Tower Application and the Electrical Load Data Form. A Zoning Appeals Application for a Special Exception may also need to be completed depending on the zoning district. To check if ZBA approval is required, see the zoning ordinance.

Please note, after receiving approval, a building permit (if any structural work is done) or electrical permit (if only electrical work) application must be completed to obtain your permit. You may submit a completed building or electrical permit application with the Antenna Collocation on Existing Tower Application.

Communication Tower

A communication tower is a structure erected on the ground and used primarily for the support of antennas for wireless telephone and similar communication purposes.  To apply for a tower approval, complete the Communication Tower Application and the Electrical Load Data Form. A Zoning Appeals Application for a Special Exception may also need to be completed depending on the zoning district. To check if ZBA approval is required, see the zoning ordinance. Please note, after receiving approval, a building permit application must be completed to obtain your permit. You may submit a completed building permit application with the Communication Tower and/or Equipment Application.

Standards for antennas and communication towers can be found in Section 4-300(B)(9) in the zoning ordinance.
