When to use this process

A separate permit is not required for an exhaust hood if:

• It is part of a project involving a building permit;
• The hood system drawings and details were included in the building plan review; and
• The exhaust hood installer is listed on the building permit application as a subcontractor. 

If a separate permit is required, use the following process as well as the fire suppression system application process.

2. Equipment specifications and cut sheets (M1 to M5)

Required licenses

1. Business licenses are required for all design professionals, contractors and subcontractors before a building permit can be issued.

2. The contractor must hold the appropriate State of South Carolina license for the specified scope of work.

Helpful regulation references

The Zoning Ordinance (PDF) requires all mechanical equipment, vents, pipes, and similar items to be located on the rear elevations to the extent practical or screened with a parapet or screen wall that has a three-dimensional cornice treatment.

Apply

1. Apply Online using the button above.
   •  Click on “New Applications"
   • Click on “Permit Applications”
   • Click on “Trade Permits”
   • Click on “Exhaust Hood Systems" and follow the prompts from there
2. City staff will review your plan and send comments back to the designated contact person on the application within approximately three business days.
   • If the plan must be revised, use the Plan Resubmittal Instructions (PDF).
3. After the above has been completed, we will process your permit, which may take another couple of days.
4. At this time, we will email you an invoice for the development fees, which will be paid through our online portal. Beware of scammers trying to obtain false payment through wire transfer or other mechanisms.
5. Note that separate permit applications are required for Fire Sprinkler Systems, Fire Alarm Systems, and Fire Suppression Systems.

After you have a permit

1. Install the exhaust hood.
2. Request a final inspection through the "Apply Online" button.
