When to use this process

The building code requires special inspections performed by third-party inspectors in specific situations, such as for:

• New commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-family buildings
  • Additions for the same
• Communication towers
• Retaining walls
• Storage racks and shelving 6 feet tall or taller
• In-field welding

How to begin

When you submit an application for a permit that requires special inspections, you will upload this document along with any others required for that particular type of application. We will review it and let you know of any required changes at that time.

Building preconstruction meeting

When a project is required to have special inspections, we will hold a building preconstruction meeting with you to explain your responsibilities and answer any questions you might have about the regulations.

During construction

During construction, special inspections must be performed according to the information provided. The special inspectors must maintain field reports and discrepancy logs, along with a description of the correction and the date.

Final reporting

Final reports must be submitted and approved by the City prior to the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy when special inspections were required.

Required documents

1. A final report documenting that all special inspections and tests required in the approved schedule of special inspections were conducted and that all discrepancies have been corrected
2. A log of the discrepancies noted in the inspections with a description of the correction and date
3. All field reports
